The automotive industry presents a unique set of challenges when it comes to microelectronic design. Not only do they require a significant number of components—most vehicles have at least 60 different electronic components to keep them functional—but they also have to meet stringent safety standards not found in many other industries. For years, the industry fought to play catch-up in a world rocketing exponentially into an ever more technology-dependent society.
AEC-Q200 Qualified: Setting the Bar High
In stepped the Automotive Electronics Council, or AEC, to remedy this issue and set worldwide benchmarks for performance and safety in relation to automotive electronic components. Their AEC-Q200 qualifications have been the gold standard for decades, and for good reason. The stringent testing a component must go through to meet these benchmarks is one of the most rigorous in the industry. These tests include:
- An initial round of electrical testing, layering on stress and an additional round of electrical testing to determine component integrity
- Exposure of the part to the maximum temperature within that product’s range for a prolonged period of time to test the part’s temperature resistance; this is followed by temperature cycling through the entire range, plus an additional round of measurement
- Testing the component’s moisture resistance by exposing it to a significant degree of humidity for a prolonged period
- Checking the operational life of the component
- Testing the component’s resistance to solvents
- Exposing the component to high levels of g-force for prolonged periods of time to test mechanical shock and vibration resistance; parts are also cycled through periods of vibration
- Testing the solderability of the component, as well as its resistance to soldering heat
- Verifying the board flex and terminal strength of the component to ensure compliance
- Strict visual inspection and a final check of physical characteristics
