A Reference Design refers to a technical blueprint of a system that is intended for others to copy. Usually an integrate circuit or other electronic device that requires other components or circuitry to be used in conjunction with their product. It encompasses the main elements of the system to make their product function properly. This gives potential users of their product a working model to start from. However, designers may enhance or modify the design as required for their application. When discussing finished products like computers, the concept is generally known as a reference platform.

The main purpose of a reference design is to support companies in development of their next generation products. The reference product is proof of concept and is usually targeted for a specific application. Reference designs enable a very short time from prototype to market. This offers a known performance solution and saves the OEM significant developmental time and money.
